Alpine Adaptive Scholarship Program

About the Program

The Alpine Adaptive Scholarship Program (AASP) was founded by skiing enthusiast and Atlanta Personal Injury Lawyer Jeffrey S. Gilbert in cooperation with Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia. The program provides challenged individuals with a chance to discover or regain a passion for skiing by utilizing modern monoski technology. Recipients of the scholarship will be granted up to the following:

  • Full Airfare
  • Ground Transportation
  • Lodging
  • Individualized Instruction
  • Lift Tickets
  • Adaptive Equipment

Other programs accept a large number of recipients and focus on the recreational aspect of skiing, but AASP takes a more selective approach. Few individuals are chosen into the program so that each person receives extensive personal attention and training. With the assistance of professionals and the supply of modern monoski equipment, a paralyzed or otherwise physically challenged individual can take on the slopes like any similarly interested, able-bodied person.

Involvement by Shepherd Center

Shepherd Center is a private hospital in Atlanta that specializes in medical treatment, research, and rehabilitation for people with spinal cord and brain injuries. Mr. Jeff Gilbert founded AASP with the help of his friends at Shepherd Center's Beyond Therapy® program, which already runs an annual recreational ski trip. The Beyond Therapy program currently utilizes a monoski donated by Mr. Gilbert to give potential skiers an opportunity to sit in a monoski and imagine the possibility of flying down a snowy slope. The monoski is also an excellent means of allowing physically challenged individuals to acclimate to the unique and foreign equipment utilized for monoskiing.
